Built in 1518, it was restored in 1888 after escaping a fire. The magnificent bell tower was destroyed in 1915, shortly before the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The church was used at the beginning of the First World War as a base for the German army. In 1960, it was finally handed over to the Armenian community. Following a huge restoration project, St. George's Church has once again become the largest Armenian church in the Middle East.
