ULU CAMII
The oldest mosque in Anatolia impresses with its basalt structure. This pagan temple was transformed into a church and then a mosque after the Arab conquest of 639. Ancient inscriptions confirm its reconstruction as early as 1091 during the reign of the Seljuk king Meliksah. The marble columns date from the Roman period. The octagonal fountain, the columns and the sundial form the most impressive parts. A true patchwork of influences and achievements from different civilizations, Ulu Camii is nevertheless a beautiful and harmonious whole.
