IÇKALE
Upper north-western part of the ramparts. Formerly a military zone, the site, under restoration, is since 2011 accessible to visitors. On the road on the left is Aslanlı Cesme ("the lion's fountain"). Behind it, on the right, the church of St. George (Karapapaz kilisesi) is said to have been in its early days a temple of the sun for pagan rites. Note the red bricks of the arches that contrast with the basalt structure. Across the street, the old prison. Further on, the Prophet Suleyman's mosque (12th century). The secondary entrance leads to Süleyman's tomb.
