ABBAZIA DI SANTA MARIA A MARE
Abbey founded by the Benedictines, preserving a 13th century crucifix in Byzantine style.
Founded by the Benedictines in 1045, the abbey received its facade of white Istrian stone in the 15th century with a carved Renaissance-style portal. The interior has kept its Romanesque structure and a grandiose 11th century mosaic floor in the central nave. A 13th century crucifix in Byzantine style and a 16th century carved and gilded wooden polyptych are also preserved. Adjacent to the church are two cloisters, one medieval, the other Renaissance.
