Cave with inscriptions engraved on the walls, a Messapian place of worship
In addition to the sandy beaches (Marina di Felloniche, Posto Vecchio, Torre Vado and Marina di Pescoluse) near Santa Maria di Leuca, the coastline is made up of high rocky cliffs pierced by some thirty karst caves. The best way to approach these spectacular geological formations is of course by sea. In the summer, you will find many local sailors in the port ready to take you on board off the coast, or small boat hire companies on the beach.
In order to best appreciate the play of colours, we advise you to go to the caves situated to the east in the morning light and to the west in the afternoon.
To the east: the grotta Cazzafri hides an immense vault rich in stalactites; the grotta del Morigio where, according to tradition, the Moors stopped before attacking Santa Maria di Leuca ; the grotta grande del Ciolo is characterized by its grandiose 30-metre high opening along the coast; at about 100 metres, the grotta piccola del Ciolo, 120 metres deep, opens into the magnificent homonymous fjord.
To the west: the Grotta Porcinara, also accessible by land, which has inscriptions engraved on the walls indicating that it was a Messapian place of worship; the Grotta del Diavolo; the Grotta del Presepe, so called because of its resemblance to a biblical setting; the Grotta delle Tre Porte, formed by three large openings; the Grotta dei Giganti, where bones and teeth of pachyderms were found.
