The church stands out for its stone tablet, considered to be the first trace of Estonian writing dating from 1407.

The village of Kaarma has a population of around 71, and has preserved its rural character in County Saare. The church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, is one of the oldest on the island, and still boasts pieces of fresco dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. A wooden sculpture of St. Joseph in the altar also dates from the 15th century. However, the most impressive curiosity is a stone tablet dating from 1407, believed to be the first trace of Estonian writing. A must-see if you're in the area.
