KAALI CREATER
This meteorite crater in Kaali is the rarest wonder in the country, known since ancient times.
18 km north of Kuressaare lies Lake Kaali, a unique place in Estonia. There have always been many legends about the origins of this lake. Thanks to the work of geologist Reinwald in 1927, we now know that its 22 m-deep crater, and its 8 satellite craters, were formed by the fall of a meteorite. However, the dating of the impact remains uncertain and varies between ~6400 and ~400 B.C. In 2015, a carbon-14 study estimated its formation at 1530-1450 B.C. It is currently listed as the youngest in Europe.
