PÖIDE CHURCH
Surprising fortress-like church in the former stronghold of the Teutonic Knights.
Another municipality in the county of Saare, this village has a population of no more than 1,000, but is well worth a (small) detour, not least for its church. The village was the stronghold of the Teutonic Knights from the 13th century onwards. The church was almost entirely destroyed during the St. George's revolt in 1343, and its remains were burned during the Second World War. It was then gradually rebuilt. Today, the church remains as surprising as ever, looking more like a fortress than a classical church.
