KARJA CHURCH
Church with pagan paintings and medieval sculptures depicting the lives of St. Catherine and St. Nicholas.
3 km from Angla, this church, built in the 14th century, is the smallest medieval church on the island. It is worth visiting for its pagan paintings (intended to frighten away demons) and medieval sculptures depicting the lives of St. Catherine and St. Nicholas. It offered a place to sleep, no doubt used by pilgrims traveling throughout Scandinavia and the island of Gotland. For the record, this is the rural church with the most medieval stone carvings of any in the Baltic States.
