ABBAZIA DI SAN MICHELE
Abbey with a baroque interior and a labyrinth of galleries and catacombs
The old Benedictine foundation from the 7th and 8th centuries was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The present building dates from the 16th century. The abbey is dedicated to the archangel St. Michael, who is said to have driven out the Saracens besieging the island of Procida. In the church with its baroque interior, you can see a painting by the school of Luca Giordano, Saint Michael driving out Lucifer, and the beautiful altar of the church in polychrome marble. The abbey, very evocative, contains a labyrinth of galleries and catacombs. Guided tours are organized on site.
