THE FORTRESS OF VELEZ-MÁLAGA
A fortress located on the highest point of the city at nearly 80 meters above sea level
The fortress was built on the highest point of the city, almost 80 metres above sea level, in the 10th century. But it was between the 14th and 15th centuries that it reached its apogee, becoming one of the most important fortresses in the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. Today, all that can be seen are sections of the ancient walls and the keep, torre del homenaje, rebuilt in the 1970s. Nevertheless, a visit here offers a fine view of the city and the Vélez plain.
