AGIOS GEORGIOS MANDILAS CAVE
On the wall of a rock column, an astonishing cavity covered with colorful fabrics installed every April 23 by climbers.
An astonishing multicolored spot appears in a cavity in the north wall of the great rock column of Agios Pnevma. This is the ancient monastery known as "St. George of the Handkerchiefs" (Αγίου Γεωργίου του Μανδηλά/Agiou Georgiou tou Mandila) founded in the 14th century. Every April 23 since the 17th century, climbers from all over Greece have used a rope to climb to a height of 40 meters and install tamata, cloth ex-votos in memory of resistance to the Ottomans.
