CAÑAS MONASTERY
Monastery in Cañas, home to a community of nuns who concoct delicious sweets and decorate porcelain.
One of the first Cistercian abbeys in Spain, founded in the twelfth century in the present-day municipality of Cañas. There are almost no remains from the Romanesque period of the abbey. On the other hand, the high altarpiece preserves a superb Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin, while the chevet is exceptionally high for Cistercian architecture of the time. The monastery is inhabited by a community of nuns who make delicious sweets and decorate porcelain. They meet to pray seven times a day.
