BENEDIKTINERABTEI METTEN
A Benedictine abbey known above all for its very rich baroque library.
Metten Abbey, 5 km from Deggendorf, was founded by Benedictine monks in the 8th century. For more than 1,200 years, clergymen have lived here according to the precepts of the order of St. Benedict: ora et labora, which means prayer and work. These monks participated in the evangelization and the clearing of the land in the region. The abbey is known for its incredible library in baroque style. With 35,000 books, it also impresses with its opulent ornamentation, especially with the atlant pillars that support the vault.
