DEUTSCHES AUSWANDERERHAUS - GERMAN IMMIGRATION HOUSE
Bremerhaven is famous for having constituted, between 1834 and 1974, an exit point, a major emigration centre for Germans leaving their native land permanently in search of a better life or a life at all. There was a time when it was the Westerners who emigrated en masse... Seven million emigrated in this way to take to the sea and set sail for Ellis Island, New York. This museum is therefore dedicated to the history of German emigration, especially to the United States. Visitors go through the different stages of the migration through various interactive, very well documented and educational exhibitions. We pass from the Bremerhaven docks to the living conditions on board a sailboat in 1854, then on a steamer in 1887, before arriving in the "Promised Land" of the United States, discovering the immigration process on Ellis Island. A fascinating museum. Only in English and German.
