ESSEN CATHEDRAL
Gothic cathedral built in 1275, with a number of frescoes from the period and a charming cloister in Essen.
Essen Cathedral (historically called Münster, today Dom) is a superb Gothic building constructed of sandstone blocks; it is the city's oldest monument and a religious edifice of the highest quality. Erected in 1275, its octagonal west aisle and crypt date back to the Ottonian period. The interior also features a number of restored frescoes from this period. The cloister is freely accessible between Rue An Sankt Quintin and Place Am Porsche, without having to pass through the church.
