FORMER ESSEN SYNAGOGUE
A large, well-preserved synagogue dating from 1913, which since 2010 has housed Essen's House of Jewish Culture.
This imposing synagogue, dating from 1913, is one of the largest and best-preserved in Germany. Since 2010, it has housed Essen's House of Jewish Culture, having been out of use since the war. Next door is the Rabbinical House, built in the same year by the same architect. Some 2,500 Essen Jews were murdered by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945. The synagogue can be visited freely or with guides in several languages.
