ZOLLVEREIN INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
This industrial complex, whose symmetrical buildings are a work of art, produced tons of coal until 1986.
The only coal mine to have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, Essen's Zollverein industrial complex is an architectural masterpiece, created by visionaries Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer. The symmetry of the buildings is impressive, and the design of the structures gives the impression of facing a work of art. Yet the site was never intended to be contemplated. Until 1986, tons of coal were produced here by no fewer than 8,000 miners working night and day in the underground. Those days are long gone, but the miners' legacy lives on.
The site offers an amazing cultural dynamic, as well as nature walks with a rediscovered wild life, bike trails and even an open-air swimming pool, imagined by two artists in 2001.
The Ruhr Museum
Opened to coincide with the selection of the Ruhr as one of the world's cultural capitals in 2010, this museum is housed in a former coal cleaning shed. Exhibits retrace the destiny of this industrial region. Nearly 6,000 exhibits are on show, from the origins of coal 300 million years ago to the present day.
The Red Dot Museum
Housed in the former boiler house, this museum is dedicated to design. More than 2,000 exhibits, elegant furniture, astonishing appliances, electronics... Enough to pique the interest of the most curious and delight the most passionate.
