As an anecdote, Altenburg-Nobitz airport had been used between 2003 and 2011 by Ryanair's low-cost fleet to serve middle Germany from London. Abandoned since then by the Irish company, the local platform remains strategic today. Located at a major geographical crossroads between Leipzig, Chemnitz and Gera, it is an important tarmac for inland connections between western Saxony and eastern Thuringia. The airport is particularly used by business customers. It also houses an aviation school and a museum.
