SANCTUAIRE DE SANTA CATERINA DEL SASSO
One of the most evocative places on the lake, a sanctuary suspended from a cliff.
Built in the 12th and 13th centuries and enlarged afterwards, the sanctuary is one of the most evocative places on the lake. It can be reached by descending a long steep staircase (or by lift). This fascinating construction, suspended from a cliff, seems to defy the laws of gravity. An incredible work for the time, when the merchant Alberto Besozzi, a survivor of a shipwreck following a storm, vowed to build it. He settled there with a small community of Dominicans.
