ZEEUWS SLAVERNIJMONUMENT - SLAVERY MONUMENT
This memorial symbolizes the union between the whites and the blacks, the red symbolizing what unites them, their heart and blood
This memorial was unveiled in 2005 in Middelburg, the birthplace of Dutch slavery. It is the work of artist Hedi Bogaers (originally from Zierikzee). It consists of 4 granite pillars where black and white are united by red. It thus symbolizes the union between black and white, with red symbolizing what unites them: heart and blood. This is where the annual Middelburg commemoration takes place on June 30, with songs and prayers.
