Vismarkt, an old fish market, is one of the most picturesque squares in Middelburg
Vismarkt is a former fish market. It's one of Middelburg's most picturesque squares, though there are several. It's made of cobblestones and features lime and chestnut trees. Markets are still held here regularly: on Thursdays, there's an antiques market, and on Saturdays, it's the turn of the brocante. There's a lovely fountain and a statue of Sofie, a girl bending over as if to give a kiss. The statue dates from 2001 and is the work of artist Sjer Jacobs.
