A Byzantine chapel in Nijmegen, rare in Northwest Europe.
Part of the Saint-Nicolas chapel dates back to 1030. It is one of the few Byzantine chapels in north-western Europe. Religious buildings in the region are often cross-shaped, but this one is polygonal. Inside, the original 11th-century stonework is clearly visible. It is assumed that this astonishing architectural heritage from Asia Minor is due to a Byzantine princess, wife of Emperor Otto II, who lived at the Valkhof at the end of the 10th century.
