ST-JEAN COMMANDERY
A remarkable commandery, restored and overlooking the river Waal, a historical monument in Nijmegen.
The St. John Commandery is a restored brick building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, overlooking the River Waal. It is a former hospital, founded in 1196 to accommodate Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. In the 13th century, it became the property of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. In the 17th century, it was occupied by French soldiers, and the Walloon church was also founded here. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War and almost razed to the ground. Fortunately, it was preserved and is now a listed monument.
