WAALBRUG
A remarkable bridge over the Waal in Nijmegen, connecting the Lent district to the north bank.
Several bridges span the Waal in Nijmegen, including the Waalbrug, which connects the Lent district to the north bank. Built between 1931 and 1936, this metal arch bridge is distinguished by its dimensions: 604 meters long and 65 meters high. The history of this structure is linked to that of the Second World War. Indeed, during the attack of the Wehrmacht on the Netherlands in May 1940, the Dutch army blew up the main arch. The bridge was quickly repaired by the German occupiers.
