ST. JANSKERK
The largest church in the country located south of the market, flanked by a single tower in Gouda
To the south of the market stands the remarkable 13th-century Church of St. John. Cross-shaped and 123 meters wide, it is the largest church in the country. Flanked by a single tower (the unstable ground on which it was built forced architects to reduce the weight of the buildings), the church is famous for its splendid stained-glass windows. These priceless treasures, which not even Protestant iconoclasts dared destroy, depict biblical scenes and the uprising of the United Provinces against Spanish rule.
