THE PIER
It is the country's oldest metal pier, inaugurated in 1860. It was built instead of a first wooden jetty which allowed fishermen to disembark Victorian time tourists without ships their feet after sea walks. At Southport, the tides are important and the water often withdraws very far from the beach, leaving huge strips of tempered sand. This promenade built in front of Victorian thermal Baths was very popular in the region and its coffee was already a place of tourist distraction. There are always slot machines that offer mini-shows, car or horse races, etc. The panoramic views are exceptional and ornithology enthusiasts will enjoy watching the birds that are repaissent at low tide: verts, cormorants, scallops and others…
