VINDOLANDA
This former military fort is one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in the country. Built before Hadrian's wall, it was destroyed and rebuilt nine times. Long after the fall of the Empire, the area remained occupied until the 9th century. Today, we can see the ruins of public baths, officers' residences, a temple or a mausoleum. It is also here that in 1973 the famous Vindolanda tablets, the oldest traces of writing in Great Britain, were dug up. They are now on display a few kilometres away in the superb Roman Army Museum. It is composed of three main galleries containing several objects from the excavations, including many shoes. Also a 3D film.... We discover the history of the wall, the Empire and the daily life of soldiers between the 1st and 4th centuries.
