SADDELL ABBEY AND CASTLE
The abbey began to be built in 1148 on order of Somerled, whose little son was to give his name to the Donald clan, the ancestor of MacDonald, lords of the islands. He brought monks from Ireland who lived according to the Cistercian precepts of abstinence and life devoted to physical work. In this abbey, large and richly carved stone stelas are found where Celtic Celtic ornament houses with boats, dragons and silhouettes of armed warriors.
Not far from the abbey and built by the bishop of Argyll on the banks of a small bay, the castle dates back to 1508. Not being open to the public at the moment, we have just seen it in its beautiful natural surroundings.
Beaches are coming to an end. The most beautiful are on the west coast and at the tip of the island, on the famous Mullof Kintyre celebrated by Paul McCartney's eponymous song. Its lighthouse built in 1788 is only kilometres away from the Irish coast…
