CAMP DELS NINOTS EXHIBITION
An exhibition in this camp allows to discover bones, accompanied by explanatory legends
Not far from what is today the town of Caldes de Malavella, inside the crater of a volcano that appeared about 5 million years ago a lake had formed 3.5 million years ago. As a result of a sudden and abrupt geological event, this crater was filled with sediments, which favoured the optimal conservation of rare endemic animal and plant remains. Excavations at Camp dels Ninots have allowed the bones of large animals (cattle, rhinoceroses and tapirs) and smaller ones such as those of turtles, frogs, rodents and fish to be extracted. This made it possible to reconstruct an entire ecosystem, especially from the period known as the Upper Pliocene. This camp owes its name to the fact that the inhabitants of the region used to go there to look for what they called dolls: menilite opal stones with curious, rounded shapes, which allowed them to imagine very diverse forms. The exhibition proposes to show these bones, accompanied by explanatory legends and panels representing what this part of the territory might have looked like millions of years ago. In addition, on the road along the excavation site, at the entrance to the town (A2), panels have been installed to show the extent of the old lake and the research area. This complex has been declared a cultural property of national interest.
