ROMAN BATHS - PUIG DE SANT GRAU
The thermal baths of Sant Grau were already recognized for their medicinal character thanks to the therapeutic effects of its waters
Classified as a Historic Monument of National Interest, the Sant Grau Baths were built by the Romans between 40 and 50 BC and were the centre of the ancient city of Aquae Calidae. Situated near the ancient Via Augusta, the main axis of European communication in Roman times, these hot springs were already known for their medicinal character thanks to the therapeutic effects of its waters. The main element of this architectural complex is a square swimming pool (7.90 m by 6.65 m) framed by a passageway accessible by stairs, located in three of its corners. The water poured into the pool through a hole dug in the central pillar above which stood an altar dedicated to Apollo. A swimming pool used for washing and enjoying the healing properties of the waters. The rest of the facilities is made up of several rooms dedicated to ancillary activities surrounding the pool, including changing rooms and massage rooms. It would seem that following a landslide in the 2nd or 3rd century, the western part of the baths was modified. In the 4th century, the building was abandoned, before being converted centuries later into a hospital for the poor, thus allowing its conservation until today. The visit allows us to understand at a glance the fundamental role that the thermal springs have played and continue to play in the identity and development of Caldes de Malavella.
