SPEED ART MUSEUM
Originally, the Speed Art Museum was designed according to the vision of the artist and philanthropist Hattie Bishop Speed (1858–1942), great amateur art, and in memory of her husband James Breckinridge Speed (1844–1912). It opened its doors in 1927 and until 2013 remained the oldest museum in Kentucky. After an entire renovation over 3 years, the inauguration of the new building at the current address, adjacent to the campus of the University of Louisville, took place in March 2016. The exhibitions presented concern all forms of art and all continents. The Speed Art Museum has over 12 000 art objects. Some of the prestigious works include Rembrandt, Monet, Courbet, Chagall, Picasso, Cézanne or Matisse, Franklin Simmons and James Brooks.
