LOUISVILLE OLD HISTORIC
It is one of Louisville's three historic districts. Its large concentration of Victorian homes makes it one of the largest historic districts of Victorian architecture in the United States.
Originally the preferred residence of the Louisville bourgeoisie from the tobacco industry, bourbon or horse racing, the district was almost destroyed in the 20th century. It was the inhabitants who mobilized to prevent its destruction. A striking example is the story of Bourbon In, currently a magnificent B&B, which was saved thanks to the intervention of the inhabitants who stood between the bulldozer and the magnificent building ready to be demolished. A year later, Old Historic was born, a district listed as a national heritage site.
Today most of the houses you will see are either private residences (belonging to the same family or divided into several apartments) or B&Bs.
To visit Old District, you can take a guided tour, including with David Dominé's (https://louisvillehistorictours.com/historic/) or explore the area for yourself. Prioritize the beautiful Saint-James course, which concentrates a beautiful selection of buildings with Victorian architecture in a varied style (Italian, Greek, Gothic Renaissance...) and its counter alleys Belgarian East and West. Don't miss Central Park and then take 3rd Street, most of whose houses once belonged to tobacco or bourbon tycoons. You will observe a wide walk on the sidewalk, it was, at the time, a high place of socialization of the local bourgeoisie.
