PAGODA TREE
The oldest Sophora tree in Japan that actually comes from the Chinese plains in Edgartown
Called Sophora from Japan, it is the oldest tree of its kind on the entire American continent. Its name is misleading, since this variety of tree actually comes from the Chinese plains. It was planted by Captain Thomas Milton, who arrived on the island in 1812 in front of his house in the 1830s. He had brought it back from one of his voyages to China, without realizing the importance that the tree would take on in the community! For nearly 180 years the people of Edgartown have admired it, taken pictures of it and climbed on it.
