In Mauritius, natural indigo dye (coloring matter from the leaves of the indigo plant) was, in centuries gone by, manufactured on the island, as witnessed by the remains of this indigoterie, the only ones that can be visited. The ruins of an old sugar mill dating back to 1779 are another cultural highlight on this historically rich southeastern route. On site, a small gallery exhibits the works of local painters and craftsmen, the place being dedicated to promoting heritage and know-how.
