This site was erected one year after independence in 1981 and was designed with the support of North Korea. It is regarded with respect by the locals. It is centered around a memorial to the 25,000 Zimbabweans who died in the civil war for independence. It is located in the heart of a 57-hectare forest on top of a hill overlooking the capital. There is a small museum at the entrance, dedicated to the anti-colonial struggle, with photographs, documents and other paraphernalia of the war and independence.
