DOON ESTATE - CHAPUNGU VILLAGE
It's the stopover in Harare to discover local art and buy souvenirs. Installed as a small village, a dozen traditional shops with each of its own signature: one will offer you batik and objects made on site, the other sells only bags and ceintures… There is also the famous Dendera gallery, which offers a fine selection of African art. For a relaxed break between two shops, Café Veldemers offers tea, coffee, snack menu and famous pastries. Outside, in the middle of the 7 ha park, more than 200 sculptures on average are exposed, and then renewed by sculptors, among which works by known artists. We have to go to see these open-air works, highlighted on sections of wood or cement cement concrete. Different kinds of stones, shapes, sizes and varying prices are proposed, from the tiny elephant to the monumental woman's body. While the largest community of sculptors is located in Tengenenge (150 km north of Harare), Chapungu is more accessible and interesting.
