Gweru has a large training center for the country's air force. The town also houses a Military Museum which is the only one of its kind in Zimbabwe. The museum opened its doors to the public on January 24, 1974 as the Midlands Museum, which was changed to its current name in 1985. It houses various galleries with exhibits on the military, aviation and police. The army gallery illustrates the development of military equipment from the 16th century onwards from the colonial period to the war of liberation.
