WESTERN ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE
Archaeological site with remains of a palestra, a stadium and houses decorated with frescoes.
The archaeological site, located opposite the Roman Odeon (1st-2nd centuries AD), is bounded by two Roman roads, the cardo and the decumanus. This part of the ancient city was abandoned in Byzantine times and under the Knights, and was only rediscovered after the destructive earthquake of 1933. Here you can see the remains of a palestra, a stadium 180 m long and 30 m wide, thermal baths and frescoed houses. Note the marvellous mosaic decorating the floor of the House of Europa, depicting Zeus transformed into a bull and kidnapping Europa.
