FORTRESS OF ANTI-MACHIA

Located on a high plateau overlooking Kardamena, this fortified city was built by the Knights of the Order of St. John in the 14th century. It was designed to monitor the strait between Kos and Nissiros and to accommodate the populations of the south of the island in the event of an Ottoman attack. This was the case on several occasions, notably during the siege of 1457: 25,000 inhabitants of the surrounding area found refuge here for almost a month. Today, we stroll through the ruins of the city and its churches, in a splendid landscape, especially at the end of the day.
