HILDENE - THE LINCOLN FAMILY HOME
This Georgian-style house was built in 1905 and has welcomed generations of the family of Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president in American history. Robert Todd Lincoln, the 16th President's eldest son and the only one of his four children who did not die until he reached adulthood, bought this property as his summer home. His daughter, Jessie Harlan Lincoln, inherited it upon her death and lived there permanently between 1946 and 1948. The house was occupied by members of the Lincoln family until 1975, when one of Abraham Lincoln's last descendants died without children. The house was completely renovated in 1978 and opened to the public. Today, guided tours of the house and its magnificent gardens are organized throughout the year. Almost all of the furniture in the house belonged to the Lincoln family.
