KITA-IN
The Kita-in was the headquarters of the sect Tendaï in the Kantō. This temple was founded in 830 by Ennin, disciple of Saichō and third rector of the sect Tendaï (794-864). Kita-in is known mainly because there is a building from the Edo Castle, the Kyakuden. It was sent here by the shōgun Tokugawa lemitsu to express his gratitude to Tandaï, one of his rectors.
The shoin is decorated with paintings made by artists headed by Yoshinobu Kanō. The ticket includes the visit of the garden of Gohyaku rakan, with its 500 statues of 40 cm high which represent, in different postures, characters who have experienced the awakening or to whom one owes respect.
