A large city described in 1521 as having the same architecture as Eastern Venice, with a population of around 30,000.
The city was described in 1521 as the Venice of the East by Magellan's chronicler, and its name literally means "village on the water". In a way, it is the soul of Brunei, the centuries-old heart of the kingdom's commerce and administration. Although it now faces the modern BSB, it is still considered the world's largest stilt village, with a population of some 30,000 people who, despite insalubrity and fires, would not leave their tranquil traditional habitat for anything in the world.
