BEGUR CASTLE
The silhouette of this castle overlooks the village and climbing it will allow you to access a viewpoint with a view of the entire center of the Empordà
It is its silhouette that overlooks the village. And climbing it will allow you to access a magnificent viewpoint over the whole central Empordà and the Catalan coast. Logically built in the 11th century on one of the highest mountains in Begur by Arnust de Begur, it served as a strategic fortress with an unbeatable view. To know a very eventful history notably marked by three destructions: Catalan civil war in 1468, French incursion of the Duke of Noailles in 1694 and war of independence against the French in 1810. Today, only the foundations remain, partly renovated in the 20th century. From the village, the walk to the summit will take you half an hour, but you can already stop at the Plaça Sant Ramon where an explanatory table will inform you about the different points visualized. And finally, the highlight of the show, a view that will go from the Pyrenees with a peak of Canigó, perhaps snow-covered, contrasting with the azure of the sea, the viewpoint of Emporda, the Medes islands and on the other side, the Formigues islands, 16 islets between Plafrugell and Palamós. One of the most beautiful viewpoints, not to be missed.
The mountains of Begur. They are the extension of the Gavarres massif on the coast, where they end in small hills, falling into the sea and forming steep cliffs. Populated by oaks, heathers and especially white pines on the coast, we can meet squirrels and foxes and observe kinglets or ant-eating torcols.
