During the Second World War, Keren was the scene of bloody fighting between the English and Italians. Launched on February 3, 1941, Keren's bataillle lasted 52 days later by the victory of the English.
The Commonwealth Cemetery, where the 440 British soldiers died in combat, and Sikh and Hindu soldiers who fought on their side, are 2 km from the city centre, on the road to Agordat, after the station.
The Italian cemetery, where 614 Italian soldiers were buried and 614 Eritrean soldiers askaris (these Eritrean soldiers who orchestrated the intérês of Italy), is located 2,5 km northeast of the city, on the road leading to the sanctuary of the Madonna of Madone.
