THE LEGACY MUSEUM
Montgomery is sadly known as the capital of slavery. At that time, two thirds of the city's population were slaves. It was the river that made it such an important port of entry, with slaves arriving by river, then being stored in warehouses next to the port before being sold to the highest bidders in the city square. With the construction of the train, the transport of slaves to other parts of the country increased considerably. Today, Mongtmory is trying to reconcile itself with this not very glorious past, with, in particular, the recent creation of two new sites: The National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum. Built on a site that makes sense, this museum dedicated to the history of African Americans from "slavery to mass incarceration" stands on a former warehouse where slaves were piled up when they left the ship waiting to be sold. A museum that thus returns to the horrors of slavery and the establishment of segregation through various videos and interactive devices that are moving, exciting and even revolting. The last part focuses on the situation of the African-American community today and the appalling incarceration rate. Between proposals for answers and denunciation, an opportunity to take stock of the work that remains to be done to move towards the full integration of the African-American community and to put an end to the injustices that continue to persist.
