CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
The cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a beautiful neo-Greek style book, is the official church of the Archdiocese of Mobile. His plans were designed by a former architect, Claude Béroujon. The first stone was laid in 1835. After fifteen years of work repeatedly interrupted, the cathedral was consecrated on December 8, 1850 by Monsignor Michael Doorman, the first bishop of Mobile in 1829. The building is 50 m long, 27 m wide and 18 m high. His towers are 31 m.
The cathedral underwent a fire in 1954. During the repairs, the air conditioning was installed in the building. In 1962, a crypt for bishops was created (visible on the left side of the entrance) and the bell tower, damaged by Hurricane Frederic in 1979, was repaired a few months later. The last major restoration dates from 2003-2004. It is highly recommended to enter the interior to admire the majesty of the places, with its white columns and its gold and pink ceiling, as well as the beautiful stained glass windows. The latter, work of the Munich firm Franz Mayer & Co, were established between 1890 and 1910.
