STAGVILLE STATE HISTORIC SITE
Historic site north of Durham hosting a very interesting tour of a large tobacco and corn plantation.
Located north of Durham, one of the largest plantations in the region, which produced tobacco and corn, among other crops. Belonging to the Bennehan-Cameron family, it is said to have exploited up to 900 slaves in the 1860s. If the house is not exceptional, compared to the traditional Greek Revival style buildings, the visit is, on the other hand, very interesting. It leads from the main house to the slave huts and the former stables and provides a wealth of information on the social and health conditions of the slaves at the time. These conditions did not change much in the end when they became agricultural workers after the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.
