Although the university was not officially founded until 1924 by Washington Duke (who gave it its name), its history dates back to 1838. Originally located in the city of Trinity, North Carolina, the university known as Trinity College was moved to Durham and served as the foundation for the creation of Duke. Today, the private university is among the top ten in the country and is sometimes referred to as the "Harvard of the South". It attracts students and researchers from all over the world. Among the personalities who studied there were Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, Timothy D. Cook, Apple's CEO, Eddy Cue, Apple's Senior Vice President, and Ricardo Lagos, Chile's former President. A visit to Durham cannot do without a visit to Duke's beautiful university. The campus is huge and is divided into several parts straddling the city and the forest. If you have little time left, focus on the western part. Don't miss Sarah P. Duke Gardens' flower gardens. Possibility to park on site and cross the park to reach the university, parking is very complicated on campus. Once on campus, don't miss the ground floor exhibits at the William R. Perkins Library and the beautiful period room, then take a walk in the chapel (Duke University Chapel). If you are there at lunchtime, plan to try one of the many food court restaurants in the beautiful Brodhead Center building. Go for a walk on the brotherhood side, (mainly concentrated between Wannamaker Dorm Lane and Union Drive). You will sometimes see a bench in front of one of them in the colours of the fraternity. At Bryan Center, the university store is a great opportunity to shop for Duke and for basketball fans, take a look at the Duke Basketball Museum and Sports Hall of Fame.
