BENNETT PLACE
An interesting visit that allows us to look back at a significant episode of the end of the Civil War and to appreciate the strategic situation Durham occupied at that time. It was here that Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston and Union General William T Sherman's met in 1865. After two meetings, they finally drafted the terms of the surrender of the armies under General Johnston's command, namely 4 states, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The event is considered as the surrender of the largest number of Confederate troops in the Civil War.
You can learn more about this historical episode by watching a short presentation film, in the small museum and by visiting the site for about 45 minutes.
